The best time of year to paint a house exterior in Michigan

Michigan's painting season is shorter than most people think. Here's what actually decides when exterior paint can go on.

The short answer

In Southeast Michigan, late spring through early fall is the most reliable window for exterior painting. But the calendar isn't what decides whether a given day works. The conditions are.

Temperature matters day and night

Every exterior paint lists a minimum temperature for application, and some premium products are rated for cooler conditions than others. You can see an example in the application requirements on Sherwin-Williams' Duration Exterior product page. What catches people out is the overnight low: paint keeps curing after the crew leaves, and a cold night can affect how a fresh coat cures. We check the product's requirements against the forecast, not just the afternoon high.

Very hot days cause problems too. Paint applied to siding in direct summer sun can dry too fast to level and bond well, so we work around the sun as it moves around the house.

Moisture, dew and rain

Siding has to be dry before paint goes on, and fresh paint needs time before rain or heavy dew. In spring and fall, mornings can stay damp until late, which shortens the working day. That's another reason a full exterior takes several days, and painting in the wrong conditions is one of the reasons paint peels.

Why booking early helps

Because the season is limited, exterior schedules fill up. If you want your house painted in a particular month, get your estimate in winter or early spring so there's time to choose colors and get on the schedule.

What you can do in winter

Winter is a good time for interior painting, cabinets and drywall repair, and for getting an exterior estimate done so you're ready when the weather turns.
